| "...When most people walk into Vadim Bora's studio, they are amazed that one artist can create such a varied body of work. The North Ossetia native, from Russia's Caucasus Mountains, is simply unlimited in his ability to create in any media. A virtuoso in graphite, ink, and charcoal, Bora expresses in only a few lines, the essence of figure and emotion. From interpretive portraits in oil to humorous caricatures, from monumental sculpture to interior decorative forms, Bora's work reflects the high standards found in classical and contemporary European techniques and traditions. The artist imbues even his simple subjects with deep allegorical and philoso-phical meaning. Vadim Bora moved to the United States in 1993. He decided upon the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, North Carolina, similar in climate and atmosphere to his native North Ossetia. He opened his own studio-gallery in the bustling heart of downtown Asheville in 1998. Here he creates his master works, found in museums and private and corporate collections around the world. In the summer of 2002, the artist opened Vadim Bora Gallery, a showcase of classical and contemporary sculpture, painting, and works on paper. It is also located in downtown Asheville..."

| "...Cynthia A. Markert, has recently been discovered by the art world even though she has been perfecting her medium for over 20 years. She has recently attracted the attention of national and international collectors. Her unique talent for mixing acrylic paint, oil sticks, ink, pastels, pencils and various mixtures of varnish on wood panels result in delicate yet strong images of women who know who they are, retaining their own identity. Each piece tells its own story..."

| "...Craig Forrest is a native North Carolinian. For over 30 years he has been a painter in the representational school. The artist is a graduate of Appalachian State University in Boone, NC with a BA degree in art and a concentration in studio painting. There he studied under the painter Bill Dunlap. He received his primary graphics instruction at Appalachian from Noyes Capehart Long. Describing himself as a "Rural Realist" the artist
roams the western North Carolina mountains with camera in hand, gathering "information" for the creative process he follows. Photographs made by the artist provide a starting point for paintings. The emphasis is not always on a literal translation of the photo. Many people are sometimes challenged to recognize the subject matter or locale when they are introduced to it by the artist in person. The term Artist's License has been used to explain his departure from an exact reproduction of the elements of a particular scene. In most cases, main subjects are treated as true representations..."

Our work can be seen in numerous publications such as Country Living magazine and Carolina Architecture as well as in books such as "Making and Decorating Fantastic Frames", and "Gilding". We've also done work on the Commerce Building in Washington D.C., Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fla. and the St. Louis Hotel in Autun, France. Lately our interest has broadened to include mosaic murals, objects and wall pieces. Our backgrounds are studio art and art history from the University of Florida along with certificates from the City and Guilds of London Institute in Painting and Decorating..."

| "...To say any one thing about my art, to claim that there is this singular motive behind my efforts, is misleading. Sometimes art is a kind of automatic writing, like someone dancing simply for the exhiliration of dancing. Or it's simply for the fun of it when I'm trying so hard not to agonize over all the details. Sometimes it's about inner anguish and displacement while playing taps in a carnival of lost souls. At other times it's only a discipline, a habit, mechanical and without feeling, yet sometimes giving great results. And lastly, I've experienced all of the above while working on a single painting or oil pastel. Yet there is this journey made as an artist, reflected in the moment of lifting a paint brush to a canvas. It's a meditative journey, no matter how loud the music I play while painting or the rambling distractions of an inner monologue. It's a dance done with the spirits of the land with their angelic choirs and red earthy energies. It's been a process within the context of towns, where I have lived in apartments and houses, immersed in the cultural hieroglyphics of windows, doors, quarks and galaxies, kitchens, trashcans, Buddhas and crucifixes, books and graffitti, beds and chairs, power lines and alleyways. It's an alphabet of nearly unlimited images. As grateful as I am for all the artists who have come before me and laid the foundation upon which I have built my own body of artistic expression, it's these choirs, earthy energies and hieroglyphics that have most influenced me with their intimate immediacy in my artistic journey..."

| "...During the latter part of 2003, I returned to pastel painting after a 20-year absence. In the interim, I spent six years as an elementary school art teacher. For ten years, I happily pursued a career as an award-winning gourd artist and instructor. All along, I maintained a successful calligraphy practice. In the search for a new way to express myself, I remembered the pastel paintings I had done in college. After digging through closets, I found an old box of pastels, started painting, and was thoroughly pleased with both the process and the results.
Pastel, as a medium, is immediate. I can pick up a color and draw exactly what is in my mind at the moment. The combination of the softness of pastel and their ultimate permanence is very appealing to me. I find pastel to be absolutely perfect for conveying the timeless quality of landscapes that are mystifyingly beautiful. From the rocky coast of Maine to the beaches and colorful coastal marshes of Florida and the Southeast, to the ever-changing scenery of the Smoky Mountains of the Carolinas, I have been fortunate to have spent the better part of my life living in the midst of landscapes that never fail to inspire something deep down inside me. These landscapes of my life, these places I love, places I live in, and places that take me by surprise along the way are the truest images I have to share with you ..." Return to PAINTERS Index... |
